Washington Technology Center is awarded $136,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy "Photovoltaic Supply Chain and Cross-Cutting Technologies" program, for a project to develop nano-scale imprinting methods to enhance thin-film silicon solar energy technology. Read article

Biofuels by the bushel

Gleaming new labs await the arrival of researchers from both the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Washington State University. In a groundbreaking federal-state collaboration, they will work together in ongoing efforts not just for creating, but for commercializing, biofuels eyond ethanol from corn. Scientists are studying how to convert cellulosic materials contained in everything from wheat straw and forestry residue to municipal solid waste diverted from landfills. Read more »

National Service Agency Taps 5 Universities To Expand Research on Volunteering

AmeriCorps, one of the largest volunteer organizations in the nation,  annouces $1 million award to fund research on volunteering. Washington State University, in cooperation with Duke University, is among the 5 universities awarded, receiving $190,560. Read full article »

When it comes to new jobs, Seattle is the leading cybercity

The Seattle area added the greatest number of high-tech jobs in 2006, outpacing Boston, San Francisco and more than 50 other U.S. cities, according to the Cybercities report from the AeA. Read more »

Washington scored fifth best in the U.S. in a survey of technology and science indicators, which is one spot better than a 2004 survey. Read more »

Washington Receives National Honor for Business Resource Web Site

Governor Chris Gregoire today announced Washington’s “Doing Business in Washington” web site has been recognized as an “outstanding achievement in the field of information technology in state government.” The designation was awarded to 11 entries chosen from among 107 submissions by 30 states. The web site was selected as the nation's top “Government to Business” digital government initiative. Read more »

Microcredit lending is on the rise for domestic business start-ups as people turn to microenterprise as a solution for the lagging economy. SBDC and WSU Join Forces

The Washington State Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) recently announced that it will be housed within the Washington State University Economic Development and Extension office, lead by newly appointed Vice President John C. Gardner. The move is part of the university’s drive to create more collaborative relationships with economic development entities across the state. Read more »
